Burra S.A. Visit

On a recent trip to South Australia, with a group of friends, we stopped at Burra and called in on Val who kindly served afternoon tea for us.

Val lives in The Smelters Home, a former Burra hotel built in 1849, a very nice historical place.

Cheers,

  1. FANCY that. Val's home town pre-dates Bendigo in central Vic. by 2 years.

Two shepherd's wives found the first gold in Bendigo (in the creek, later named Bendigo Creek) in 1851. Altho they tried to keep it quiet news got out and of course the Gold Rush followed.
As I've noted on Billy B's. main blogsite Bendigo became the sixth richest goldfield ever in the world.
Above Ballarat in the same Victorian region
even tho' Ballarat has done a "snow job' with its Sovereign Hill re-creation.

The Bendigo Advertiser, the oldest paper on the Australian Goldfields, was first published in late 1853.
I worked for this estimable daily publication for almost 25 years: 1977 to 2001.

Incidentally, the City of Great Bendigo now boasts a population of 105,000. Substantially bigger than Ballarat. There's a sort of mini-Melbourne/Sydney rivalry between the 2 goldfields cities.

Wonder if Val knows the name(s) of the papers published down the decades in Burra ??

I am quite sure that Val would know of the papers you refer to. She WAS a member of the Burra historical society. She is very aware of the history of Burra - a most interesting town - which you can "google". As she doesn't look at blogs or e-mails - you could phone her. I am sure she would appreciate a call from a fellow ASOPIAN.
Hopefully the next up here from Bill, will be a "steam choo choo" trip tomorrow.
    Well done Bill as always.
