VALE DAVID ARGENT

It was with shock and sadness that we heard of Dave's death on 31 October at Smithton in Tasmania, where he and his wife Kerry had settled in retirement.
Dave was at ASOPA in 1962/63 and I remember him as a loveable larrikin nicknamed Kurt. I was in awe of how he passed exams when he missed so many lectures. In fact he wasn't even recognised by Les Peterkin, the PE lecturer, when Dave turned up for the last lesson of the term so that he could pass the ropes course.
In P/NG he worked in New Ireland, Mt Hagen and Keltiga, where he had Pius Wingti (later to become Prime Minister) in his school.
Our thoughts and sympathy go out to Kerry and her family.

  1. "Kurt" was one of those characters commonly referred to as being "larger than life". Never one for heeding authority, Kurt did what Kurt wanted to do. I played football with him in the '60's when he would come up to Hagen a day or so early for "practice"...and never went back to "Wap" until he had provisioned from "Steamships" in Hagen on the Monday / Tuesday...consequence????..not much teaching.
I don't think he ever cleaned his footy boots from the day he bought them...similarly with his socks and shorts !!!! That was Dave...didn't give a shit !...and believed that life was for living and not conforming. The world has lost another character.

  2. "Kurt" eh!
I remember that there was someone, obviously nicknamed "Kurt", at ASOPA 62/63 - but until today didn't know who that was person was.
The photo shown brings back memories of Port Macquarie - better ones than the arrival at Wauchope Station and a certain bus!
I hope that "Kurt" and the "Moose" won that card game as shown????? I should imagine the language from the "Moose" if they didn't - shades of Wau 1968 and the card games!!!
A great "VALE" to "Kurt", Dave Argent - well done. My sincere condolences to the Argent family. Rest in Peace, mate.
